We Have the Mind of Christ

It is the great privilege of having the mind of Christ as Christians. When we give our lives to Christ, we are born again and become new creatures in Christ. In previous lessons, we talked about the born again blessing. But another blessing is that the Bible teaches us that we also have the mind of Christ. This is a great blessing and help.

Let’s look at a very good verse that mentions this in 1 Corinthians 2:16. In this chapter, verses 10-15 talk about how the Holy Spirit reveals things to us, and it ends in verse 16. It says, “Who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?” We, for our part, have the mind of Christ. NIV And the most important part is where it says, we have the mind of Christ. What a beautiful promise, as believers we have the mind of Christ, and it is because the Holy Spirit already lives in us, giving us this mind of Christ.

But even though we already have this, there is a struggle for us. It is that we still carry this part called the flesh, which thinks against what the Spirit thinks. That’s why the issue is to think according to the Spirit and not according to the flesh. The Bible talks a lot about this. Let’s look at some verses that show us this situation.

Look at what Romans 8:5-9 says: “Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the desires of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the desires of the Spirit. 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, while the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 7 The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who live according to the flesh cannot please God.9 However, you do not live according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.”NIV. The point is to think according to the Spirit.

Another good verse is Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” KJV. We must think well as believers. Something interesting is that as Christians we are always in a spiritual battle against the devil and his forces and against the flesh. And honestly, much of this struggle takes place in our minds with the devil sowing lies there, and it is up to us to think well to win and overcome and reject these lies.

The key is to think correctly. Look at Romans 12:2, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Another similar verse is Ephesians 4:23, which says, “Be renewed in the attitude of your mind;” NIV. These verses tell us that we must be transformed and renewed in our way of thinking. And so, the question is, how can we do this?

Well, more than anything else, we are transformed in our minds and way of thinking by the Bible, the Word of God. If you want to think well and with the mind of Christ, you need to be in the Bible every day and spend a lot of time in church where the Bible is preached and taught. That’s how we think well. The Bible is like the mind of Christ revealed. And when we are filled with the Word, we are thinking correctly according to the mind of Christ. To have victory and think well, you must be always in the Bible. If you are not doing this, it is almost impossible to walk like a victor, and you will be spiritually weak, not thinking well. But thank God, if you are in the Word and growing in it, you will think well and be a spiritual victor.

You must also be careful with things that make us think badly and against the Word. Perhaps because of bad things you see on your computer or phone or television. Or because you listen to music that is not good spiritually or other things that are not so good. And perhaps you should be careful about friendships with people who hurt us spiritually. And it is a fact that we become and think like our friends. Our best friends should be believers who help us think well.

So, when we receive Christ, the Holy Spirit enters our lives and He enters with this mind of Christ, but it is our responsibility to develop this mind of Christ through time in the Word.

Thank God for this mind of Christ. It is a very great blessing from God for us.
