God’s Calling

We know that God has many blessings, but in this series, we are only talking about ten of them. Today we will finish by talking about the great blessing of being called by God. Many people throughout history have heard this call from God. It is a call to serve Him and to be used by Him to bless the world and His people.

Throughout history, God has called people to fulfill His purposes and will. He is still doing so today.

Let’s look at some very special calls that God made in the Bible. The first is in Exodus 3, and it was God calling Moses. Look at verses 2-6. “2 While he was there, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in the flames of a burning bush. Moses noticed that the bush was on fire, but it was not being consumed, 3 so he thought, “How amazing! I’m going to see why the bush is not burning up.4 When the Lord saw that Moses was coming to look, he called to him from the bush, “Moses, Moses! Here I am,” he replied.5 “Don’t come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for you are standing on holy ground. 6 I am the God of your father. I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” When Moses heard this, he covered his face, for he was afraid to look at God.” NIV. And we know that God spoke to Moses about returning to Egypt to free his people. Because of this call, God used Moses powerfully, and the people were freed from their slavery.

Another beautiful example is found in the New Testament when Christ called some of his disciples. Look at Matthew 4:18-22: As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.21 Further on he saw two other brothers, James and John, sons of Zebedee, in a boat with their father, mending their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.” NIV. How beautiful is this direct call by Jesus to the brothers Andrew and Peter and then to John and James. And they immediately left everything and followed him. We know that because of this call, these four disciples were greatly used by God. God is still calling people to his harvest. And the need is very great today, which is why Christ said in Matthew 10:37-38, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few,” he said to his disciples. 38 Therefore, ask the Lord of the harvest to send workers into his field. NIV We should all pray like this today.

God is looking for workers to touch and bless the world like Moses and the disciples did. We should all be open to his call. I remember when I was a youth pastor at a church in the United States. In 1988, I went on a mission trip to Guatemala. There, I received a call from God to the mission field, and God opened a door in Colombia, where we stayed for more than 30 years. We are still missionaries, but now from the US. We have seen much fruit for the kingdom, many churches planted, and many people converted. All because of this beautiful call from God.

I know that perhaps today He is speaking to someone to serve Him as a pastor or teacher or evangelist or missionary. If He is speaking to you, it would be worth saying, “Yes, Lord.”

On the other hand, we are all called to serve him. Perhaps not all of us are called to some ministry as a full-time pastor, but we are all called to serve and be used by God. He needs everyone to reach this world for Christ.

The question then is, what are you doing for Christ? At the very least, we should all evangelize the lost when we can. We should all serve and be faithful in our churches in whatever way we can. We must all show God’s love to others by serving them. We must all draw closer to God through prayer and time in the Bible and in church, and be faithful in everything to extend the kingdom of God. It is time to rise up and serve Him with all our hearts. It is because the need is great, and time is short.

Again, perhaps today God is calling someone to a special ministry or position. Do not fear this, God is faithful, and it is a good thing to be called by Him. You just have to say yes, and you can begin the process of learning and training. And the Lord will use you. Let us all say yes, Lord. And as the prophet Isaiah said, here I am, send me, we too must say the same. This call is a very great blessing.
