There is Abundant Life in Christ
We know that in Christ we have eternal life, but we also have abundant life in this life. Look at what John 10:10 says: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” NIV How wonderful that in Christ there is abundant life. And in the Gospel of John and in almost the entire New Testament, the Greek word that was translated as “life” was the Greek word ZOE. And this means more than ordinary life. It means abundant,
full, and complete life, even the life of God in us. In other words, good life, and this is what Christ brings us, abundant and good life. This is not to say that we will not have problems or trials, but even during these, there is good and abundant life to help and lift us up.
There is a theory that I believe to be true, which says that in every person there is a void in their being that only God can fill. And that is why people do many wrong things to fill this void, such as drinking or drugs or trying to make much money or immorality, and all of this attracts more problems and is only a temporary fix that cannot satisfy. It is like the Samaritan woman in John 14 who had a complicated life because of her mistakes and sins, but Christ told her something important in John 4:13-14 that has a lot to do with this idea. He said, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,” Jesus replied, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” NIV. In other words, Christ can satisfy us and fill this void within us.
We also see this in Matthew 13:44-46. In this passage are the parables of the hidden treasure and the great pearl. That is, someone seeking purpose and the important things in life, this abundant life. Look at what it says: “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.45 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.” NIV That is, in Christ there is purpose, and in him is what everyone is looking for and needs. What a blessing that in Christ there is good and abundant life, and it is a blessing for God’s people. And another thing to think about is that when someone receives Christ as their savior, then the Holy Spirit enters their life. And the Spirit comes into their life with his fruit. And this fruit gives us many blessings throughout our lives and is the source of abundant life.
What attracts us to this fruit? Well, the list is in Galatians 5:22-23: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things.” NIV This fruit is what everyone needs and is looking for.
In the Spirit there is love, which everyone wants. There are also peace and joy. What a blessing that there are joy and peace even amid difficulties and stress. This
fruit also has patience and kindness and goodness and faithfulness and humility. We all need more of this, and it is all available through the Holy Spirit within us. And how wonderful that the Spirit also gives us self-control so that we can control ourselves, because sometimes we want to do what is wrong, but even in this, the Holy Spirit helps us.
Without a doubt, God gives us life through Christ. If you are not a Christian, it would be worthwhile to give your life to Him today to receive not only eternal life but also abundant life now. And if you are a Christian but are not walking in this good life as you should, it is time to draw closer to God and live in this abundant life that God gives us.
How wonderful that in Christ we have abundant life.
