God is a Healer
He is a God who heals His people. And even in our modern era, He is still doing it.
Let’s look at a Bible verse in Exodus 15. This was written shortly after God’s people crossed the Red Sea on dry land by a great miracle. Look at verse 26 in the last part, “For I am the LORD your healer” KJV. This is another redemptive name of God, Jehovah Rapha, or the God who heals. And it was a revelation of what our God is like. Without a doubt, He is a God who heals.
And an important fact to know is that healing was also included in the redemption that we all have through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. Let’s look at Isaiah 53:5, “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him, and by his stripes we are healed.” KJV We all agree that through this sacrifice we have forgiveness, but don’t forget that it also says, by his wounds we are healed. And look at what 1 Peter 2:24 says: “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.” NIV Once again, healing is included in God’s redemption along with forgiveness. And we know that Christ healed many when he was on earth, and after his ascension, the early church also saw many healings. Look at what Acts 10:38 says about the Lord: “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, because God was with him.” KJV, It says healing all. How wonderful that God is a healer.
Sometimes we struggle with the idea that, if we know that God heals, will healing be His will for me? Only once did someone ask Christ about His will in this matter of healing. And it was a leper in Matthew 8. Look at what Matthew 8:2-3 says: “And behold, a leper came and knelt before him, saying, ‘Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.’ 3 Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, ‘I will; be clean.’ And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.” And you know, Hebrews 13:8 says, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” KJV. In other words, God does not change; he is still a healer. You can have faith that God can and wants to heal you. On the other hand, we know that God is sovereign, and we know of cases of people who were not healed. But generally, biblically, and because healing is included in Jesus’ redemption, we can have full faith that God will heal us. And if a Christian dies from an illness, he is also healed at once, entering heaven free from pain, illness, and sadness. We can pray with faith because God is indeed a healer. Sometimes we lack faith in this because we do not know well what the Word says. We should all look for promises in the Bible regarding healing because our faith is strengthened by the Bible. And there are many. We have already mentioned some, but there are many more in the Bible.
Another good one in Psalm 103:3 says, “He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases.” NLT And notice that it doesn’t say He heals some diseases, but all of them. What a wonderful promise.
And another beautiful thing to consider is that we have talked about healing the body, but I believe that this also includes healing emotions. There is a lot of emotional sickness today. Many emotional wounds. We must know that God can and wants to heal these types of illnesses as well.
I like what Luke 1:37 says, “For nothing is impossible with God.” NIV
With God, nothing is impossible. He can heal you, touch you, and lift you up. Although it may seem impossible, nothing is impossible for Him. And it doesn’t matter how He does it. Sometimes it is through a quick miracle, and sometimes it is a process of recovery, and sometimes it is through doctors, but He does want to heal us.
Another practical thing is to attend a church that believes in healing and that prays regularly for the sick. This is also a great help to your faith.
