Beloved One: Alene

An elven girl named Alene is discovered as an infant and raised by an old man. When she is older, she goes off on a quest to find her true family, and her true identity. As she travels, she learns different things, all of which are allegories for Christian principles. Along her adventure she meets people, who are representative of biblical characters, who help her learn important principles about life, faith, and her identity of self. Written by Elizabeth Ware.

Chapter Fifteen: “Prison”

Carcere… Just, what was this place? The closest to an explanation, was that it was some sort of prison, and what she was in, seemed to fit that. But, Alene was far too frightened to think about that now.

Gryphon dragged her into one of the cells and threw her inside. With a cackle, the door slammed shut. She looked out to see the other man, standing next to Gryphon. “And what is a child doing here?”

“Dolum’s orders, Ubel.”

“Fine…” Ubel grunted.

Gryphon gave the girl one final smirk of satisfaction before going back the way they came in.

Alene sat up, looking down at her chained arms. Ubel looked down at her. “I do not know what Dolum wants with a little one like you, but I will not question it.”

“Please… let me go!” she moved to the cell bars. “Let me go! Someone, please help me!”

“Silence!”

Alene shuddered as the man yelled at her, but again cried out. “Help! Someone help me!” This time Ubel grabbed the girl by her hair. He landed a punch into Alene’s face. She flew back against the cell wall.

“Keep silent. I do not want to hear your pitiful screams.”

The girl reached up and felt the blood begin to trickle from her lip. She sobbed quietly. Ubel gave her a look of contempt before leaving.  As she heard the door to the cell block close, she leaned against the bars and sobbed.

She continued to cry and cry. Her tears were soon spent. Now she had to figure out what to do. She tried to fit her head through the bars to see the hallway even better. However, she could see nothing of use.

She took a deep breath, in order to cry out once more. She hoped that Ubel would not hear her. “HELP! ANYONE! HELP ME! SOMEONE! ANYONE! PLEASE…! Please… help me… is anyone even here…? Does anyone even hear me…?” No one answered.

She wished to cry again, but the tears refused to come at all. She laid back against the bars, resting her head against one of the bars, closing her eyes.

A few minutes later, she felt something hard hit her head and knock her away. She cried out and looked up. Ubel grinned down at her. “I heard you screaming earlier… I told you to shut your mouth!” Once more, he kicked Alene.

The girl cried out, crawling to the back of the cell. Now she truly understood, what it meant to live in fear.
