What are You Wearing?
“Make sacred garments for your brother Aaron to give him dignity and honor.” Exodus 28:2 NIV
Swim suit shopping! What. A. Pain. I avoid it like the plague. Would someone please install warm dim lighting in dressing rooms instead of the pale
white fluorescent headlights that make women look like the blood has drained from their bodies? If you choose to take up this task, I will personally knight you into sainthood! It’s humiliating enough to squeeze into these stomach-flattening-core-defining spandex tubes; it would be nice to have some favorable lighting.
Luckily, we don’t have to wear a swimsuit everyday, but what we put on in the morning matters. It often reveals how we feel. It may reflect what we think of ourselves. It tells who we are and whose we are.
“Have Aaron your brother brought to you from among the Israelites, along with his sons Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, so they may serve me as priests. Make sacred garments for your brother Aar- on to give him dignity and honor. Tell all the skilled workers to whom I have given wisdom in such matters that they are to make garments for Aaron, for his consecration, so he may serve me as priest” (Ex 28:1-3).
The scene unfolds as God is setting up his dwelling place on earth, the Tabernacle. His general contractor of the project, Moses, was given marching orders to go and get his brother, Aaron. Aaron is about to be presented with the job offer of all offers. The offer? To be set apart to serve God as a priest. You might not be jumping at the opportunity, but it was an honor! Aaron was going to have the distinguished position to experience the presence of God on a whole new level.
Like any important position, Aaron would have a dress code. He was to wear sacred garments made with fine craftsmanship. These garments would give him honor and dignity. They would be a constant reminder of God’s holiness! They would set him apart from the rest and distinguish him from the best.
Like Aaron, our King offers us a covering of dignity and honor. It is a layer we must not forget to put on.
“I am overwhelmed with joy in the Lord my God! For he has dressed me with the clothing of salvation and draped me in a robe of righteousness” (Is. 61:10).
Each morning when we wake, we need to remind ourselves we are wrapped in the righteousness of God. What does righteousness mean? It means we are right in the eyes of God, that we are justified before him. Though we are imperfect humans because of our faith, we are covered by the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ. Though we are stained red with sin, when God looks at us he sees white washed purity.
Let us be overwhelmed with joy and underwhelmed with guilt. Let us put on our robe of salvation and see our reflection of righteousness in our Father’s eyes.
King of all Kings, you dress your daughters in royal robes of your Son’s righteousness. You see us for what we are and whose we are! Allow our eyes to be opened to see ourselves as you do! Love, Your Daughters
