Daughters – Part 4: Daughters of Dignity

The fourth part of Erin Nicole Thompson's' Daughters Series.

What are We Doing?

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9

In the world’s eyes, I don’t have the most dignified job. I am a booger-wiping, diaper-changing, crumb-cleaning, stay-at-home mom. I went through a phase where I was trying to find a more sophisticated title for what I do. I tried Domestic Engineer, CEO of Home Operations, Emperor-ess of the Thompson Universe, Managing Officer of Local Personnel, Executive Director of Little Human Resources, but none of them stuck.

Yet despite needing to pick dehydrated french-fries off of my mini-van floor, I am reminded that as God’s daughter I have a dignified and honored role.

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light” (1 Pet. 2:9).

Did you here that? As a child of God, we are a chosen people. As a daughter of the King, we are a royal priesthood. Before Jesus walked the earth, the priests had the distinguished role to be set apart to serve God and offer him sacrifices in the temple. These sacrifices paid for the sins of the people and served to worship God. Because of the death of Christ Jesus we don’t have go about the same priest- hood procedures. But we do have the distinguished honor to worship God and offer him our lives.

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Rom. 12:1-2).

Bringing our best to God as we strive to know, worship, and serve him is our spiritual offering. There will always be peaks and valleys in our attempts. Seasons in which we stray. But the general trajectory of our lives should be to pursue God with all we are. If we do that, we will serve Him well as part of the royal priesthood.

In addition to our dignified position, we are part of the Church as God builds up his spiritual family. In verse 9, we are called “a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation.” These terms indicate we are a unique community called by God. We are to represent him in our world. There is nothing like us in all the earth. The church is unique. The church is chosen, royal, holy, and “God’s own” in a way that no other people are.

In your heart of hearts, you can rest assured knowing that you are chosen. In your mind’s eye, you can know that you are set apart. You are God’s own special possession and a critical player in a dynasty that God is building called the Church. No matter what your occupation here on earth, as a daughter of the King, you have a dignified duty to be part of a royal priesthood. And there is nothing else like it in all the earth!

Father, you have given us a distinguished position in your Kingdom. To be chosen, royal, and set apart for you is an honor beyond our comprehension. Help us to live in such a way that our lives become a fragrant offering to you. Love, Your Daughters
