The Weaker Sex?

Soapboxes are not my stage, unless the topic deals with oppression, inequality, or discrimination. Especially when the injustice is against women.

But the statement, “Women are the weaker sex” may be one I own after taking a closer look at the life of Jesus. Like men, women are the image bearers of God. Read Genesis 1:26-28 (Message):

God spoke: “Let us make human beings in our image, make them reflecting our nature so they can be responsible for the fish in the sea, the birds in the air, the cattle, And, yes, Earth itself, and every animal that moves on the face of Earth.” God created human beings; he created them godlike, Reflecting God’s nature. He created them male and female. Women bear the image of Jesus.

Jesus said, learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls (Matthew 11:29 KJV).

Is Jesus saying he is weak? Far from it. Gentleness and humility are true characteristics of strength. A strength that loves the unlovable, restores peace to community, surrenders self for life, and trust for the impossible.

The world has painted a different picture of strength. The world has taught that strength is found in independence, boundaries, achievement, and self-reliance.

God says something very different: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me (2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV).

If being weak means being more like Jesus, I will take the title every time.
