Made for More: Part 1

Author: Dave Beroth

Do you feel there is more to your story than meets the eye?

I believe there is more to your life than simply going through a series of events. The truth is that we are more than the sum of our experiences. You were made for more than you could have imagined.

For most of us, our lives are so full of events that we neglect to collect the meaning in them.

So how do we create space in our lives for God and find meaning in the events?

There is a story in the Gospel of Mark when a young man whose life was full of events and accomplishments asked Jesus a very important question.

‘As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”’
– Mark 10:17, New International Version

This man’s question revealed two things:

  1. He viewed eternal life as something to be achieved by doing good.
  2. He felt insecure about his future destiny.

God created you to experience the assurance of eternal life. And his plan is for this gift of salvation to highly impact your earthly experience. Jesus said in John 10:10, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

Not one of this man’s good deeds lead to the assurance of eternal life. Without eternal life, we miss the “more and better” of this life.

The events of our lives lead to a life of more when they…

1. Bring Greater Glory to God

You were created to bring glory to God. Think about your everyday life: how can you bring glory to God even in the small things?

2. Bring Greater Change in Us

While your experiences should never define you, they should always refine you.

What experiences (good or bad) are you letting define your life?

What is the danger in letting a good experience define you?

3. Bring Greater Hope for Others

How might your life give hope to others and point them towards God?
