What Brings True Significance?

Author: The Journey Online Team

As we move through life, we often feel that life is empty and that there must be more to life than meets the eye.

There is a hope within us that there is more to our lives than simply going through the different events of life. Something inside tells us that we are more than the sum of our experiences. The truth is that we can only find meaning in allowing our Creator to have the central place in our hearts and lives.

There is a story in the Bible where we read of a man who, like many of us, was seeking the meaning of life. The Bible says, “As Jesus started on His way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Mark 10:17, New International Version

This man’s question revealed two things:

1. He thought eternal life was something to be obtained by doing something.

2. He was not sure about his future after-life destiny.

This story reminds us that life only has meaning, and that we can only find true personal significance as our lives are connected to God. God made us to know Him. It is in knowing God and in trusting His Son Jesus Christ that we find life—eternal life. This is the very life of God that satisfies our souls.

Eternal life is a gift that God gives us. We don’t deserve it nor can we earn it. Eternal life is the gift that God gives us when we decide to follow Jesus. The Bible says that Jesus died on the cross for our sins and that three days later He arose from the dead. The Bible also tells us that through Jesus’ death and resurrection our sins can be forgiven, and we can have the free gift of eternal life. As we trust Jesus, God becomes our Heavenly Father.

We are then free to do God’s will as revealed in the Bible. As children of God we desire to honor our Heavenly Father with our lives. This is what brings true significance into our lives.
