The Significance of Confessions

The Significance of Confessions

Our God is a creative and a very verbal God. He spoke the worlds into existence. He created us, mankind, in His image. This means He put into us the same creative power of the spoken word that He used to create the universe and all that is in it.

In Genesis, we see “And God SAID”, “And God SAID”, “And God CALLED” repeated over and over again. Whatever he said, came into existence.

Genesis 1:27 Amplified Bible (AMP)

So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them.

After telling Adam and Eve to “Be fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over every living thing”, God gave Adam the job of calling or naming every animal and bird.

Genesis 2:19 Amplified Bible (AMP)

So the LORD God formed out of the ground every animal of the field and every bird of the air and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name.

This showed the authority that Adam’s words had over the created beings in the Garden of Eden. This powerful, creative characteristic of man, was further demonstrated in the life of Abram. God made a covenant promise to this man that seemed impossible to fulfill. Genesis 12:1-3 He would be a great nation even though he was old, and his wife was old and barren.

God used the power of Abram’s own words to create the manifestation of the promise. He changed Abram’s name to Abraham, which means father of many nations, and Sarai was to be called Sarah, mother of nations. Every time anyone spoke their new names they were declaring or confessing the manifestation of the meaning of their names.

Genesis 17:5 Amplified Bible (AMP)

“No longer shall your name be Abram (exalted father), But your name shall be Abraham (father of a multitude); For I will make you the father of many nations.

Genesis 21:2-3 Amplified Bible (AMP)

So Sarah conceived and gave birth to a son for Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time of which God had spoken to him. Abraham named his son Isaac (laughter), the son to whom Sarah gave birth.

Instruction to Joshua

When Moses died after leading the Israelites out of Egypt toward their promised land, Joshua became their leader. God gave him specific instructions about how he was to conduct himself. One of these instructions involved what he was to speak and what would happen because of his obedience.

Joshua 1:8 Amplified Bible (AMP)

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall read [and meditate on] it day and night, so that you may be careful to do [everything] in accordance with all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will be [a]successful.

“From your mouth” leads me to believe that Joshua was to speak the words of the law. Also, in Vines , meditate is defined to moan, growl, utter, speak. Also, to think in earnest, speaking to God or yourself in low tones.

If this was a part of Joshua’s success, it is reasonable to think this is a pattern for us to follow, as well. This instruction confirms the importance of what a man says, and the results words can produce. Adam “called” the animals their names. Abram and his associates called him by his new name, Abraham, which meant father of many nations.

Words of Wisdom

Proverbs 18:20-21 Amplified Bible (AMP)

A man’s stomach will be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; He will be satisfied with the consequence of his words. Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequences of their words.

Isaiah 55:10-11 Amplified Bible (AMP)

“For as the rain and snow come down from heaven, And do not return there without watering the earth, Making it bear and sprout, And providing seed to the sower and bread to the eater, So will My word be which goes out of My mouth; It will not return to Me void (useless, without result), Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.

Matthew 12:34 New King James Version (NKJV)

Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

Romans 10:8-10 Amplified Bible (AMP)

But what does it say? “THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART”—that is, the word [the message, the basis] of faith which we preach— because if you acknowledge and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord [recognizing His power, authority, and majesty as God], and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart a person believes [in Christ as Savior] resulting in his justification [that is, being made righteous—being freed of the guilt of sin and made acceptable to God]; and with the mouth he acknowledges and confesses [his faith openly], resulting in and confirming [his] salvation.

Hebrews 4:14 Amplified Bible (AMP)

Inasmuch then as we [believers] have a great High Priest who has [already ascended and] passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession [of faith and cling tenaciously to our absolute trust in Him as Savior].

Hebrews 10:23 Amplified Bible (AMP)

Let us seize and hold tightly the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is reliable and trustworthy and faithful [to His word];

Hebrews 4:11-13 Amplified Bible (AMP)

“ Let us therefore make every effort to enter that rest [of God, to know and experience it for ourselves], so that no one will fall by following the same example of disobedience [as those who died in the wilderness]. 12 For the word of God is living and active and full of power [making it operative, energizing, and effective]. It is sharper than any two-edged [a]sword, penetrating as far as the division of the [b]soul and spirit [the completeness of a person], and of both joints and marrow [the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and judging the very thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And not a creature exists that is concealed from His sight, but all things are open and exposed, and revealed to the eyes of Him with whom we have to give account.

John 6:63 Amplified Bible (AMP)

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh conveys no benefit [it is of no account]. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life [providing eternal life].

Psalm 103:20 Amplified Bible (AMP)

Bless the LORD, you His angels, You mighty ones who do His commandments, Obeying the voice of His word!

Hebrews 1:14 Amplified Bible (AMP)

Are not all the angels ministering spirits sent out [by God] to serve (accompany, protect) those who will inherit salvation? [Of course they are!]

How important are my words and God’s words?

After reading these scriptures, there can be little doubt about the importance and results created by our words and by the confession of God’s Words.

1. Words have consequences.

2. Words create life or death.

3. Our words come out of our heart and express what we truly believe.

4. Believing in our heart and confessing with our mouth that Jesus is our Lord is the way we enter the Kingdom of God and are saved.

5. The Words of God have power. They expose the creatures of darkness.

6. God’s Words always accomplish what they are sent to do.

7. Jesus serves us as our High Priest, listening to us, and interceding for us before Father God. We are to consistently make a confession of our faith in Him and to Him.

8. The words of Jesus contain spirit and life.

9. Angels obey the Words of God.

10. Angels are sent by God to help believers.
