But Why?
“Everything was created through him [Christ] and for him.” Colossians 1:16
So why go through all the work? Sometimes after cooking a laborious meal that was scarfed down in 10 minutes or left to waste on a plate, I wonder
why I went through all that work? Think how long Thanksgiving dinner takes to prepare! Then as quickly as it takes for your husband to change the channel from the Hallmark network to ESPN, all the food is gone.
Here’s a thought. Have you ever wondered why God went through all the work to design us? As a drama queen myself, I have wondered. Our third question as we continue to uncover our value is, “But why?” So let’s see what the Bible has to say.
“Everything was created through him [Christ] and for him” (Col. 1:16).
First, “for him.” We were created for the King. We were designed for God. All of creation – the fish, the birds, the trees and mountains – were created for his enjoyment and desires, for his pleasure and purposes. This verse specifically states that we were created for Christ as a reference point to his supremacy over all creation. That one day Jesus Christ will have rule and authority over all the earth. Everything that exists on the earth was created for the purposes, plans, and pleasure of the King.
“Then God said, ‘Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.’ So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (Gen. 1:26-27).
Second, “to be like us.” We were created to be like God. Now this doesn’t mean we are like him in physical form, as he has no form. But we were created to “share, though imperfectly and finitely, in God’s nature, that is in his communicable attributes (life, personality, truth, wisdom, love, holiness, justice), and so have the capacity for spiritual fellowship with him” (Walvoord, John F. & Zuck, Roy B., The Bible Knowledge Commentary).
Though there are qualities about God that are his alone, he transferred to us the attributes of him- self that he could share. So we could have the ability to be in relationship with him.
We find our worth being created for Christ. We find our value being designed like the King. Why all the work? Because in the eyes of our beholder, we’re worth it. He tells us so!
Father, we have worth in your eyes. We have value as your design. What a wonder that we get to be like you so we may enjoy you. Help us continue to grow and deepen our relationship with you. Stretch our trust. Deepen our resolve. Fortify our character in you. Love, Your Daughters
