Day 323: True Friends

Today’s Scripture: James 4:4

Central Thought: We need to use discernment when choosing our friends.

The Bible consistently warns us about dangerous alliances. In 1920 the country of Hungary lost two-thirds of its land and half its population in the unfair and infamous Treaty of Trianon. Consequently, when Germany, under Hitler, arranged the return of some of Hungary’s territory in the late 1930’s, Hungary—eager and grateful to recoup losses—entered into an alliance with Nazi Germany.

Quickly disillusioned with the Nazis, Hungary then spent most of World War II unsuccessfully trying to extricate itself from the bargain with the Axis and from the War. Sadly, Hungary’s efforts only brought destruction, as the country was first occupied by the Germans, then the Russians, eventually becoming a Soviet satellite. Even the regained territory was lost, and the country reverted to the same borders set by Trianon in 1920.

Germany seemed a powerful friend to little, oppressed Hungary that was surrounded by enemies. However, even when the pressure is great and all appears to be lost, we must still seek God’s wisdom. We are most vulnerable to ‘unequal yokes” when we are most desperate. Prayerfully seek those with whom God would set you in partnership. Anything less is deadly.

Devotional Prayer: Lord, grant us the wisdom to discern our true friends, and to be Yours.
