Believing in the Impossible
Author: Dave ArnoldAdela Rogers St. John wrote an outstanding book entitled Some are Born Great. In it, she tells the story of Rachael Carson, who wrote Silent Spring.
In the book, there is a conversation between Alice and the Red Queen. Alice says,
“One can’t believe impossible things.”
The queen answers,
“I dare say, you haven’t had much practice. When I was your age, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I believed in as many as six impossible things before I had breakfast.”
“And that,” says Rachael Carson, “is the very necessary thing to do and to know. If you start believing in impossible things before breakfast, the first thing you know, by dinner time, they are not impossible anymore.”1
“Jesus said, ‘If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes’” (Mark 9:23).
“What you discover on your own is always more exciting than what someone else discovers for you – it’s like the difference between romantic love and an arranged marriage.”2
