Day 99: Be Ready!

Author: Kathy Varis

Today’s Scripture: Luke 12:40

Central Thought: A believer’s life needs to reflect a readiness for the Lord’s return.

When we look at the first advent of Jesus, it is obvious that most people did not expect Him or recognized Him. They did not hear the angels sing of his birth like the shepherds. They did not notice the star in the east like the Wise Men. They did not expect the Messiah to enter the world as a baby. No one thought the backwoods village of Nazareth could produce anything good.

All the clues were written in the scrolls that were read each Sabbath by the rabbis. Everyone looked for the Messiah, but few recognized Him when He appeared because He did not show up in the way they expected.

All the clues for the Second Coming are in the Scriptures, too. People speculate about the signs and try to guess when He will return, but no one knows the day or the hour—only the Father. He probably keeps it a secret so we do not slack off. He knows our tendency to selfish pursuits. If God numbers the hairs of our head, then our days, our attitudes, and our actions are important to God.

We are admonished in Luke 12:40 to ‘be ready; for the Son of God is coming at an hour that you do not expect” (NKJV). Make every day count! God is watching all the time. Like soldiers keeping watch, we need to keep ourselves alert and ready to meet our Commander at anytime. We do not want Him to find us sleeping on duty.

Devotional Prayer: Lord, You know my heart and how I like to follow my own pursuits instead of Yours. Help me to be alert to those You bring across my path so I can connect them to You. Help me to live my life so that at all times I’m ready to meet You.
