Day 114: Anxieties of Life

Author: Sylvia Stewart

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 90:1-17

Central Thought: ‘Anxiety is a thin stream of fear trickling through the mind. If encouraged, it cuts a channel into which all other thoughts are drained” (Arthur Somers Roche).

We may be tempted to allow worry to build into anxiety. Anxiety leads to fear. Fear causes us to keep our mind’s eye on ourselves instead of focusing on God’s Kingdom and His soon return. Our spiritual vision becomes foreshortened.

Psalm 91 includes multiple reasons why we should not be anxious. Among them are:

  •  God is our refuge (verse 2).
  •  He heals sickness (verse 3).
  •  He puts Himself between His children and their enemy (verse 4).
  •  He shields from night terrors and daytime fears (verse 6).
  •  He guards in battle (verses 7 and 8).
  •  He watches over us (verses 10-12.)
  •  He protects (verse 13).
  •  He answers (verse 15).
  •  He grants eternal life (verse 16).

Anxiety is an indication of our infidelity to God. Do we really believe that God has all power and wisdom? Worrisome thoughts bombard our minds, but we can refuse to let them build a rat’s nest in our imaginations. Praying over each anxious thought keeps us from panic, allowing Him to soothe the worries of life.

Devotional Prayer: Lord, help me remember to bring my anxious thoughts to You. Help me to be faithful to trust You with all my anxieties.
