60 Seconds – The Man With A Screw Loose.

Author: Dave Arnold

Years ago, a young man attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. His classmates referred to him as “The little man with a screw loose in the head and nuts about South America.”

He had little of impressive ability, but he did possess a noble aim that consumed his entire life. He eventually went to South America, having a long impressive and fruitful ministry. His name was T. J. Bach, and his testimony is engraved imperishably in the annals of missionary endeavor.

In Mark 8:35, Christ said, “For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake, and the gospel’s will save it.” A man prayed, “Lord, send me anywhere…lay any burden upon me…sever any ties but the tie that binds me to Thy service and to Thy heart.” This man walked over 11,000, miles and traveled over 29,000 miles, and it is estimated that he spoke personally to over two million people. He was not a door-to-door salesman, nor a media solicitor. He was a missionary. His name was David Livingstone.

The J. B. Phillips’ translation in The New Testament In Modern English renders Romans 12:2, “With eyes wide open to the mercies of God, I beg you, my brothers, as an act of intelligent worship, to give Him your bodies, as a living sacrifice, consecrated to Him and acceptable by Him.” David Brainerd prayed, “Send me to the rough savage pagans in the wilderness. Send me from all that is called comfort on earth. Send me even to death itself, if it be in Thy service and to promote Thy kingdom.”

William Borden, the heir of the Borden Dairy fortune, graduated from Yale University. With the prospects of a long and wealthy life, Borden decided to become a missionary. He immediately went to Egypt to learn Arabic, so he could work among the Muslims in China. While in Egypt, he contracted spinal meningitis. Within a month, 25-year old William Borden was dead. After his death, the following words were found penned in his Bible: “No reserves,” “No retreats,” and “No regrets.”

“Before we can pray, ‘Lord, Thy kingdom come,’ we must be willing to pray, ‘My kingdom go'” (Alan Redpath).
