60 Seconds – The Bible

Author: Dave Arnold

John Wesley said, “I beg leave to propose a short, clean and strong argument to prove the Divine inspiration of the Holy Scriptures:

The Bible must be the invention of good men or angels, bad men or devils, or of God.
It could not be the invention of good men or angels, for they neither would nor could make a book and tell lies all the time they were writing it saying, ‘Thus saith the Lord,’ when it was their own invention. It could not be the invention of bad men or devils, for they would not make a book which commands all duty, forbids all sin, and condemns their souls to hell to all eternity.
Therefore, I draw this conclusion, that the Bible must be given by Divine inspiration!”

In 1 Timothy 4:6, Paul spoke of being “nourished in the words of faith and of the good doctrine.” He is saying to be trained and educated in the Scriptures, becoming knowledgeable of God’s Word. The idea is “constantly nourishing thyself.”

Martin Luther said, “I study my Bible in the same way I gather apples. First, I shake the whole tree that the ripest may fall. Then I shake each limb, and when I have shaken each limb I shake every branch and every twig. Then I look under every leaf.”

Peter wrote that we are to “desire the pure milk of the Word” (1 Peter 2:2).

“Desire” speaks of an intense yearning. Job stated that he treasured His Word “more that necessary food” (Job 23:12).

D. L. Moody once said, “If all the time that I have spent praying for faith was put together, it would be months. I thought that some day faith was going to come down and strike me like lightning. But faith did not come. One day I read in the tenth chapter of Romans, ‘So then faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.’ I had closed my Bible and prayed for ‘faith.’ I now opened my Bible and began to read God’s Word, and faith has been growing ever since.”

“We read to know we are not alone” (C. S. Lewis).
