Fasting is such a powerful tool that we often take for granted as followers of Jesus.
Many times we don’t prioritize fasting. We see in Matthew chapter 4 that Jesus understood the importance of fasting as he fasted for 40 days right before his ministry would launch. “After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.”- Matthew 4:2. You may ask yourself why you should fast. I would say that although we should present a purpose before God for our fast, our focus should not be on what we can “get” through our fast. Our fast should be about focusing on the “GIVER” and not so much on what He can give.
As we focus on the King, he will provide the miracles we seek in an even greater way than we expected. Every time we get hungry when we fast we should give Him a moment of praise or of honor. When we fast, we should do the following.
Pray with an attitude of thanksgiving.
- Acknowledge that fasting builds our faith.
- Memorize a verse or passage
- Lastly, we must be persistent as we allow the Holy Spirit to direct our fast. Scripture tells us, “You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.” Hebrews 10:36. Let us take advantage of the gift of fasting in order to be more than conquerors through Christ who loves us!
