Who You Are to God
Author: Lauren MiramontiWhen I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? (Psalm 8:3-4 ESV)
Have you ever felt inadequate? Does the world seem too big, making you feel insignificant?
We like to understand how everything works. Often, however, we find ourselves trying to figure what God does and why He does it, but failing. God is too big for our human minds. We feel so small. We can spend so much time trying to understand who God is, that we forget who we are in His eyes. So listen to this reminder.
We are created in His image. Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth” (Genesis 1:26 ESV). Look at the beauty of God’s creation, from the tallest mountain to the most distant star, along with its extraordinary creatures. Yet it’s you and me—human beings—who are created after the mold of God himself.
God thinks you’re the best thing He created.
He made the Earth for us, not the other way around. We were not a finishing touch for creation; we were the point of creation. God made everything else around us to be a home and an environment for us to enjoy our lives. We are his beloved children, protected and cared for and loved. To God, absolutely nothing is more important than you.
So if you ever feel bad about yourself, or depressed, or don’t think you’re worth anything to anybody, just remember: God thinks you are the best thing He created. Compared to the Earth itself, compared to the entire universe, you are the most important. If you can learn to see yourself through God’s eyes, the dark times won’t seem so dark.
