Reflecting the Love of Jesus
Author: Barbara LighthizerTwo friends and I made a week-long trip to do family research.
We all believe in Jesus and attend the same church. However, Elane stood out in my mind as an example of an ambassador of the love of Jesus. She wasn’t aware that I noticed her actions. She did not try to impress anyone, but the fruits of the Spirit were in action in her life.
Galatians 5:22-23 NKJV: “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.”
Be Positive!
Elane greeted everyone with a smile and often spoke to someone in the elevator or to those in our line when we were waiting for a business to open. She gave a positive comment to almost everyone she spoke to, which obviously pleased these strangers.
When leaving her daily tip in the hotel, Elane didn’t just leave the money; she also wrote a note of thanks. She gave generous tips, even for a cup of coffee.
If the three of us ventured into criticism, Elane would bring up the positive side of the situation.
When we were leaving the hotel restaurant on the day of departure, Elane thanked the hostess who worked during the week of our stay. “I’ll miss your sunny smile,” she said. “I hope you’ll be here when we return next year.” The hostess spoke broken English, but it was clear Elane’s comments meant a great deal to her.
Each of her actions sent a message of kindness, love, and peace–a person who cared enough to show interest. People are starved for encouragement and kindness. The smallest deed helps to show the love of Christ.
A little extra money added to the tip can lighten someone’s financial burden. A word of thanks to a maid can make her feel her efforts are appreciated, not just taken for granted. A kind word to someone can brighten the person’s day and chase away the feelings of being alone. A positive attitude can bring peace.
God’s words of love can truly free us from the weight and pain of life. His love is unconditional. When we accept His gift of salvation through Jesus, the chains of sin fall from our spirit and we are free. Life has new meaning, and each day brings joyous hope that can only come from the Lord.
Are we proclaiming God’s love through our actions? We do not have to wait for an opportunity to witness or to become a friend to someone. Let us show the love of Jesus in every aspect of our contact with people. It may take time to develop the habit, but with the Lord’s help, His love will flow through us in even the smallest contact with people. Share the love of Christ by taking time to express appreciation and kindness to people you may never see again.
