When Mom and Dad Fight

Author: The Journey Online Team

Have you ever thought, “Help! Mom and Dad are fighting again and I’m scared!”

It can be scary when your parents fight. All kinds of thoughts and fears can run through your mind, such as, “Is Daddy going to get mad and leave?” or “Are my parents going to get a divorce?” These are very scary thoughts. What can you do when you are faced with this situation?

The most important thing to remember is that you have to completely trust in God.

Proverbs 3:5 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” As much as you don’t want your parents to fight, sometimes it happens. Also remember that parents are people just like you.

Think about your best friend. Do you ever get into a fight with your best friend? Sure you do, because people are different. There will always be people who think differently than you. The same thing happens with your parents. They don’t always agree on things, and sometimes that leads to an argument. You must understand that when your parents have a difference of opinion, it doesn’t always mean they are fighting. It is a good thing when parents can work things out by talking.

As always, when you are scared, you can ask God for help and comfort. But sometimes even your parents make wrong decisions. They have made a wrong decision if they actually have a physical fight with each other. If your parents ever get to this point in their fighting, they really do need help. You can tell them that their fighting really frightens you. Hopefully, they will see that they have made some bad decisions and they will stop the fighting. Also you can find a person that you trust to talk to about the situation. This person can be a teacher, a pastor, a policeman, or any other trusted adult. They can get your parents the help they need.

You can trust that God will take care of you. If your parents do fight, ask God to help them stop. Remember that everyone has disagreements, but when it comes to the point of hitting and pushing, even parents need help. Sometimes God uses other people to get parents the help they need. God is always there to help you when you are scared.
