Growing in God’s Grace.
Over the last few lessons, we have shared five messages about God’s grace. Here, we will share the sixth and final message in this series. We have learned what grace is: it is God’s goodness, favor, and blessings. By His grace, God has many blessings for His people. We learned that all this grace is free for us, but it was very costly for Christ. We have this grace today because of His sacrifice on the cross 2,000 years ago.
Today I want to talk to you about the importance of always continuing to grow in grace. Paul and the other authors of the New Testament wrote a lot about growing in the grace of the Lord. There is always more to learn about grace.
The question then is, how do we grow in grace? Today I am going to share with you some basic ways to grow in grace.
The first is that we grow in grace more through the Word, the Bible, than through anything else. We need God’s Word very much. II Corinthians 1:20 says, “All the promises God has made are yes in Christ.” (NIV) All of them. There are thousands of God’s promises in the Bible, and they are for us in Christ by grace. But if we don’t know about the promises, how are we going to receive what they say? Hosea 4:6 says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” (NIV) And this is a lack
of knowledge of the Word. The Bible is our spiritual bread of life. To grow in grace, you need the Bible every day. That is why it is also important to attend a good church, because there the Word is being taught and preached.
The second thing we need to do to grow in grace is to be in His presence every day. We do this through prayer and worship. It is our responsibility to pray and worship Him every day. In His presence there is grace to help and strengthen us greatly. We already talked in another message about what Hebrews 4:16 says. It says, “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (NIV) God’s throne is called the throne of grace. Through Jesus, we have access to this throne through prayer. And as it says there is all the grace we need at Hs throne.
Another way to grow in grace is by spending time with other believers who also want to grow in grace. As Christians, we have experienced His grace, and in fact, His grace is in and upon our lives. So, every believer has grace from Him to bless others. It is mutual help among Christians. I can help you if you are going through difficulties, and at the same time, you can help me if I am going through problems. There is grace through fellowship among us. There is grace through your brother in Christ.
Finally, to grow in grace, you must be a person of grace. That is, you must extend God’s grace through your life to others. By loving them, helping them, praying for them. You can extend grace by evangelizing the lost. You can extend grace by being generous. Not only financially, but also generous with your time and service. Don’t forget that a great sign of God’s grace is generosity. Grace has a lot to do with generosity. God is the most generous being there is. He gave the best of heaven to all of us. John 3:16-17 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” 17 God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (NIV) How generous God is in His grace and love. We should be generous people too, extending grace to the world.
As we conclude this series, I thank God for His grace. And I am thankful that we are still in the age of grace that began with Jesus’ coming into the world. That said, we believe that we are in the last days of the earth and that soon the age of God’s grace will change to the age of his judgment. The good news is, there is grace for your life today, you can take advantage of that grace now. We don’t know what will happen tomorrow or in a week, but today there is grace for your life, to forgive and save you, and to help you in any situation.
