Joseph – Characteristics of a Godly Man

Author: Charles Stanley

Joseph, husband of Mary, exhibited the characteristics of a godly man.

Men today, especially fathers, face tremendous challenges.

When we look through the Scriptures, we find there are many men who can serve as examples in this area. However, let’s look specifically at Joseph, Mary’s husband, for a more practical insight into what it means to be a godly man.

If we were to list the characteristics of godliness–salvation, prayer, and a sincere love for God would be at the top. Each of these are important. In fact, you cannot have intimacy with God without them. However, Joseph’s life was exemplary of several more that lead to a sincere devotion to God.

Up until the time he became engaged to Mary, Joseph’s life was much like the other men in his hometown. He had business concerns and goals for the future, but nothing seriously interrupted his daily activity until Mary informed him she was pregnant.

While he was shocked by Mary’s news, he also was troubled in his heart for her and her reputation. God saw the confusion building inside of Joseph and sent an angel to him saying:

“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for that which has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for it is He who will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:20-21).

From this point on, Joseph never doubted God’s will in choosing him to watch over Mary and her son.

He was faithful not only to his wife, but to God.

He had courage because he ignored the accompanying rumors that came as a result of Mary’s condition and understood that God’s plan was more important than what others thought of him. He was sensitive to the Holy Spirit. This is evidenced in his acceptance of God’s guidance on more than one occasion. After the birth of Jesus an angel appeared to him warning him of impending danger. Joseph immediately took Mary and Jesus into Egypt where they found safety until the threat passed. (Matthew 2:13-15)

Joseph was a humble man who honored God by obeying His Word. There was consistency to his life. He was content and could be counted on to follow God regardless of the personal costs.

How can you grow in your faith to become a godly man?

For one, be committed in your daily walk with Christ. Attend a church where the Word of God is held up as the standard of life. Make a commitment to God and your loved ones that you will not abandon your devotion to Christ or them.

There is a sense of godly responsibility you gain when you learn to stand up for what is right. A godly man is not a passive man who is easily swayed. He is a man of conviction, faith, and prayer.

When Joseph had no one else to guide and comfort him, he turned to God and found the strength and love he needed to get through the most difficult of circumstances. Will you make Joseph’s commitment to his family yours today?
