God is Not Tired of You

Author: Jodi Detrick

I get it. Living in a world like ours drains you. It’s not just the break-neck speed we move at these days or the to-do lists that seem to be on auto-reload just when, finally, there are only four or five more things to cross off. It’s also the ceaseless whoosh of troubling news that gushes from our televisions and radios or seeps up from our internet feeds like a broken sewer pipe, tainting the hopeful air we long to breathe. It’s the crackling tension of Facebook post wars between those whose friendships have been lost in the wasteland of polarized viewpoints.

Me-Fatigue

But even beyond all that, here’s the un-retouched truth: I get a really bad case of “me-fatigue” pretty often. I get tired of looking back at the end of a long day only to realize I missed doing the things that were most important–taking the time to encourage a struggling friend, checking in on the hearts of those I love most, showing tangible kindness to a stranger, caring for my own soul. I get tired of setting exercise and writing goals that I don’t keep. I get tired of regretting the sharp tone I used with my husband.

I get tired of wondering if God is tired of me.

“And then I drag my exhausted spirit onto the welcoming lap of these ancient but still sturdy words: Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom,”
– Isaiah 40:28, New International Version

God is Not Tired of Me

Better than any regimen of mega vitamins and superfoods–more energizing than a sleeping-in Saturday followed by a Venti quad-shot latte–this truth infuses me with renewed strength warding off the plague of chronic soul fatigue. God. Is. Not. Tired. Of. Me. He’s not sighing, rolling his eyes, and wishing I would just go away already.

Here it is again: “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail,” (Lamentations 3:22, NIV).

Get this. That addiction you are literally sick and tired of…the worn-thin fabric of your struggling marriage…the parenting failures you detest…the unrealized dreams you are tired of tending to keep alive one more day–none of these, or the weight of ten thousand more like them, wear God out.

When your head hits the pillow tonight, tell your spent spirit this: the God who never grows weary is not tired of me.
