Women’s Devotional: Prophetic Intercession

In Ephesians 6:17 Paul tells us to “pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests…” I would like to focus on one kind of prayer…that of Prophetic Intercession.

Prophetic Intercession is co-laboring with God to bring forth that which is true in the Spirit into the realm of the natural. The Holy Spirit helps us when we pray (Rom. 8:26), which includes showing us for whom, or what we should pray. As a result, we pray Spirit-directed prayers that are powerful and effective! This may seem like a difficult term to grasp, but on a day to day basis, it is quite simple.

You may be having your devotional time and someone or a situation comes to mind… stop and pray. You may be driving down the street, or doing the dishes and an old friend comes to mind that you haven’t thought of for quite some time…stop and pray. You may have a “knowing” that something is wrong…stop and pray. And when you don’t know what to pray, pray in your prayer language…this is exactly what it’s there for.

Many years ago now I had a dream about my pastor while he was on a hunting trip. In my dream I saw him riding a horse and all of a sudden he put his hand to his chest and fell off his horse. At that point I woke up and immediately starting praying! I prayed for quite a while, fervently, and when I felt a release I went back to sleep. I believe that the Lord woke me up to pray that he would be safe.

That next Sunday, I asked the pastor’s wife how her husband’s hunting trip was. She said the strangest thing happened. He did get an elk, and he had to pack it out quite a ways. He told his wife that he realized he is not as young as he used to be and packing that elk out was so strenuous that he felt like he could have had a heart attack! I was sure glad I prayed!!! That is effective prophetic intercession!

In I Kings 18 Elijah, the prophet, said to Ahab…”there is the sound of a heavy rain.” Elijah must have heard the sound, prophesied about it, and then went up to the top of Mt. Carmel and began to intercede. He prayed 7 times before there was any sign of rain. Elijah prophesied what he heard, then prayed until he received the promise. This is persistent prophetic intercession, in other words, “Pray Until Something Happens” (PUSH). We have to be relentless in our praying, even when we have been given a promise from God.

The key to prophetic intercession is recognizing how God speaks to us, and letting Him direct our times of prayer; because prayer must always be a 2-way conversation. May we stop long enough to listen to what’s on God’s heart.
