Day 251: Power of Love

Author: Richard J. Bennett

Today’s Scripture: Song of Solomon 8:6-7

Central Thought: Love is powerful and precious.

Events in recent years have reminded us of the power of nature, particularly forces of nature involving water. A tsunami in December 2004 devastated the region of South and Southeast Asia, resulting in the loss of over two hundred thousand lives. In 2005, hurricane Katrina struck the southern United States, doing more than eighty billion dollars in damages and killing almost two thousand people.

The Scriptures declare that ‘many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it” (Song of Solomon 8:7). It is amazing to hear stories of how the power of love has allowed people to overcome incredible obstacles and endure severe hardships. Perhaps the most amazing example of the power of love is the foundation of the gospel: God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son to die so people could live forever (see John 3:16).

Love is not only powerful, but precious. Song of Solomon 8:7 also states, ‘If a man offered for love all the wealth of his house, he would be utterly despised.” The truly wealthy person is one who knows he or she is loved. And no amount of money can buy true love.

Love is powerful and precious. But this should not surprise us, for ‘God is love” (1 John 4:8).

Devotional Prayer: Thank You, God, that You are love.
