Day 271: High Contrast

Author: Sherman Shell

Today’s Scripture: Ephesians 5:1-21

Central Thought: We are to think and act wisely, recognizing the work and intentions of God to bless His followers and to curse those who reject His wisdom and will.

Living life as Jesus Christ demonstrated to His followers is difficult. It may cost our lives, health, wealth, and everything the normal person holds dear. It cost Jesus everything, too. He left heaven, His throne, respect, health, and all those eternal blessings we seek.

Think about these contrasts found in our passages for today: immorality/purity, foolish talking/thanksgiving, darkness/light, bad/good fruit, displeasing/pleasing to God, unwise/wise, drunken/Spirit-filled, rebellion/submission. How many other contrasts can you find in these passages?

Try a simple exercise by dividing a blank piece of paper into two columns. Label one side ‘Evil” and the other side ‘Good.” As you read through each passage, list the contrasting characteristics. Place a checkmark beside each item you recognize in your own life. Underline the things you believe you should work on. Mark with an ‘X” those things you have already overcome.

Devotional Prayer: Dear God, open our eyes to see truth as You reveal it to us and endow us with wisdom and boldness to follow Your way exclusively!
