Day 54: Remember the Answers

Author: Nancy A. Stevens

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 40:1-10

Central Thought: Recounting past victories and answers to prayer will help us face the future with confidence

When we are faced with challenges and problems, we sometimes forget the victories God has already brought about in our lives. Remembering that the difficulties we encountered in the past seemed like gigantic obstacles at the time can help us keep current problems in perspective.

What answers to prayer have you received? Perhaps God led you to the right place of employment when you needed a job. Maybe He protected you from what could have been a fatal car accident, or He brought you safely through surgery. Perhaps He sent someone to buy your house when you needed to sell it.

In our Scripture reading, David recounts how God lifted him out of a pit, set him on a rock, and put a new song in his mouth. In gratitude he praises God, ‘Many, O LORD my God, are the wonders you have done” (verse 5, NIV). However, David also shared with others: ‘I speak of your faithfulness and salvation. I do not conceal your love and your truth” (verse 10).

Our problems seem to increase in magnitude when we meditate on them and anxiously try to figure out how to deal with them. Telling others about the ways God has helped us can reinforce our faith and give us the courage to face the future.

Devotional Prayer: Father, help us to meditate on the many answers You have given to our prayers and to remember that just as You helped us in the past, You will help us now.
