Day 299: A Time to Come Home

Author: Don Bailey

Today’s Scripture: Jeremiah 50:1-5

Central Thought: God wants us to restore our focus to Him.

‘Our seven-year old boy is missing. Please help us find him.” TV and radio reports broadcast this urgent message from frantic parents whose son had wandered off during the night from their campsite in rugged mountain terrain. Volunteers showed up in large numbers to comb the surrounding area and look for the lad. Finally, after 16 stress-filled hours the boy heard his name and called back, ‘I’m over here.” The boy had fallen and broken his leg, yet he was still in relatively good spirits and was more than ready to go home.

The people of Israel and Judah had lost sight of God and needed to find their way home. Jeremiah prophesied that the people, while living as captives in foreign lands, would tearfully seek God and ask to be shown their way back to Him. As they found their way home, they would bind themselves to God ‘in an everlasting covenant” (verse 5, NIV).

Sometimes we, too, lose sight of God and find ourselves in need of coming home to Him. At those times we can either rationalize that we are so very busy that we have no time for God, or we can humbly seek Him and receive a warm welcome home.

Devotional Prayer: Show me the way back to You when I lose sight of You, Lord.
