Day 289: An Undivided Heart

Author: Travis Busby

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 86:11 (NIV)

Central Thought: Unity is crucial for the believer’s heart.

‘Teach me your way, O Lord, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.”

Unity is crucial for the believer’s heart. We see many places that mention the power of unity in Scripture. God spoke clearly in the Commandments that we are to have no other gods before Him. We are also not to make any image in the form of god to worship. God never intended His own to have a divided heart. Division brings confusion. Confusion brings doubt. Doubt brings unbelief. When our heart becomes divided with any other ‘god” in this life, we start the process to unbelief in the One true God.

The psalmist writes a great prayer. Pray this verse daily, ‘Lord, give me an undivided heart to fear Your name.” This prayer will bring our lives into focus with God’s will. Every day there is a plan the Lord intends for us to live. We will not walk in it unless our heart is united with the Lord.

Finally, the purpose of an undivided heart is to fear the Lord. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. The fear of the Lord will guard our heart against sin. The fear of the Lord will be our basis for the daily decisions we make.

Devotional Prayer: Lord grant me an undivided heart to walk with You daily and to know Your will for my life. I pray that as my heart is unified with You, I will fear Your name and this will draw others closer to You.
