NT Fire Starters – Day 326: 1 Peter 3:1-22

READ: 1 Peter 3:1-22

THINK: From the moment we awake each day, our senses are bombarded with images and impressions of what society perceives as beautiful, successful and satisfied. Almost inevitably, these are the opposite of God’s standards of beauty and success. In fact, the world’s false impressions set unrealistic and unattainable standards that often lead to dissatisfaction and hopelessness. But Christ’s followers have something inside of them that reflects true satisfaction–something that stands in such positive contrast to worldly images that people are bound to ask about it. When they do, we must be ready to tell them how and why we have such a distinct hope (3:15).

RESPOND: How can a spouse’s humility and godly example influence a husband or wife who doesn’t know Christ? (See 3:1 note.) Where should true beauty come from, and how should it show? (See 3:3-4 note.) How should a husband treat his wife and why? (See 3:7 first note.) In what way must a husband take the lead in demonstrating humility and submission? (See 3:7 note, sub point 3.) What spiritual consequence can result if husbands and wives don’t treat each other right? (See 3:7 second note.) What does it take to “love life and see good days” (vv. 10-11)? (See 3:10 note.) What is God’s promise to Christians who suffer for doing good (v. 14)? What does it mean, “in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord”? (See 3:15 first note.) As a follower of Christ, why and how are you to “always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have”? (See 3:15 second note.) Why is it important to “do this with gentleness and respect” (v. 15)? (See sub point 3.) Why did Jesus give His life, and what did that ultimately accomplish? (See 3:18 note.) How is water baptism related to spiritual salvation through faith in Christ? (See 3:21 note.)

PRAY: Pray for anyone you know who is struggling in their marriage or family. Pray that you focus more on inner beauty than outer beauty–both in yourself and others. Ask God to help you set a humble and submissive example in all you do. Pray that you’ll always be prepared to share your faith and hope in Jesus with a gracious attitude.

ACT: As you get ready for the day, give greater attention to inner beauty than outer beauty. Make a deliberate effort to get along with everyone today.
