NT Fire Starters – Day 310: Hebrews 8:1-13
READ: Hebrews 8:1-13
THINK: Have you ever done something over and over–something that worked, but with a lot of effort. You may have even wondered, “There has to be a better way.” Then perhaps someone showed you that better way, and suddenly, things got a little easier. Or perhaps you used a product for a long time and it seemed to work just fine–until the “New and Improved” version came out. Then it became apparent that something was lacking all along. When Jesus came into the world, the way He made for us to God was more than an improvement; it was the perfect and permanent method God had planned for all along. Everything that came before was aimed at showing us what was missing in our lives and giving us a full appreciation for what Jesus has accomplished for us.
RESPOND: In what way does Jesus serve as our high priest? (See 8:1 note.) Why is His heavenly priesthood ultimately more effective than any earthly priesthood (vv. 1-6)? Why was it so important that exact specifications be followed in building the Old Testament tabernacle (the portable worship center used by the Israelites from the time of Moses until the building of the temple under King Solomon)? (See v. 5.) In what specific ways is Jesus’ New Testament ministry superior to that of the Old Testament priests? (See 8:6-13 note and article on The Old Covenant and the New Covenant. p. 1820.) What is a “covenant” in regard to God’s relationship with people? In what way is the new covenant established by Christ based on “better promises” than the old covenant established under Moses? In what way was the old covenant incomplete and inadequate? (See article on p. 1820.) How did Jesus’ life and ministry fulfill the old covenant and establish God’s new covenant with us? In what ways does the new covenant function differently than the old (vv. 10, 12)? Why and in what way is the new covenant able to remain in effect permanently?
PRAY: Give God thanks for making a new “life agreement” with you, based on Jesus’ sacrifice, which provides the gifts of forgiveness and eternal life. Thank Him for the promises available to you as you continue to entrust your life to Him.
ACT: Jesus made a way for people to receive a personal relationship with God if they entrust their lives to Him. Just as Jesus bridged the relational gap between us and God, make an effort to build bridges of relationship with individuals you hope to influence for Jesus. Aim to eventually help lead them into a personal relationship with Him.
