NT Fire Starters – Day 157: John 20:1-18

READ: John 20:1-18

THINK: Do you picture Jesus’ followers as older people or younger? Illustrations depicting Bible characters often portray the disciples as long-bearded, middle-aged fellows–which is highly unlikely. In fact, this passage may lend itself to a somewhat odd observation, but it seems that with all of the running back and forth–both men and women–they were probably a bit younger and more inclined to fast-paced action. Of course, there were other indications of youthfulness, beside the fact that Jesus was only in His early thirties, His closest followers were intense, idealistic and adventurous. Some were prone to inhibited emotion and all were willing to stake their lives on what others saw as a big risk at best. Though they didn’t realize it at the time, life was just beginning for Jesus’ followers.

RESPOND: Why did Jesus have to rise from the dead (v. 9)? (See Matthew 28:6 note.) How would His mission to bring spiritual salvation and eternal life have been incomplete without the resurrection? What is significant about the fact that Jesus appeared first to Mary, rather than any of His disciples, following His resurrection? (See 20:16 note.) What great privilege did Mary have after seeing Jesus? (See 20:17 note.) In what way does Jesus continue to reveal himself to those who may not seem prominent–or may often be overlooked–in society today? What hope does Jesus’ resurrection give you personally? How does it inspire you to serve Him?

PRAY: Thank Jesus for His resurrection and for conquering death for you. Thank Him for the new life He now gives you. Ask Him to help you take advantage of the opportunity to spread the hope of this life to others.

ACT: Have you made a practice of talking to people about Jesus since you’ve accepted Him and allowed Him to change your life? Your conversations could include both Christians and non-Christians with whom you’re willing to talk about God’s goodness to you, to others, or in the world and creation at large. Consider how often such conversations include sharing your faith with those who don’t know Jesus, leading them closer to accepting Him for themselves. Try to talk to at least one person today about Jesus or spiritual matters.
