Day 307: The Most Common Sin

Author: Thomas Allison

Today’s Scripture: Proverbs 26:28

Central Thought: Why is it so difficult for people to tell the truth?

Although it is almost certainly the most common sin, lying is not the least damaging or deadly. We live in a society where people in authority, people in the public service, and people in everyday life do not tell the truth on a regular basis. Although we can look at these and point a finger of blame, only one Child I can think of never failed to tell the truth.

Since the first lie that man was exposed to in the Garden we have seen a plague of lies—not on just on our generation, but on every generation. We are lured to take the first step away from truth by reasoning that ‘I had to lie or I would have hurt their feelings.”

The Bible calls for a bridling of the tongue and calls it an unruly member. The Bible warns—even in speaking to the Lord—against using a great mass of words as if the number of words will sway God. Many people feel that if they share everything they know, others will get to ‘know” them and appreciate them. Nothing is further from the truth.

It seems appropriate that we find today’s verse at the end of a chapter that deals with fools. Our tongues will make us look foolish if we do not control them. Speak less. Speak truth.

Devotional Prayer: Dear God, teach me the discipline of speaking in a way that is pleasing to You.
