Day 321: The Best Gifts

Author: Don Bailey

Today’s Scripture: James 1:16-18

Central Thought: We need to acknowledge that God’s gifts are the best gifts.

‘The best gift of all is Jesus….” Many sing this delightful song during the Christmas season and acknowledge (outwardly at least) its truth. Yet, during the other eleven months of the year it can become very easy to feel that God’s gifts are not tangible enough to be all that useful. Some even say, ‘I have real needs and need real help, not just spiritual concepts.”

James may have been aware of people who turned to other sources to meet their needs when he penned these words. In fact, the preceding verses discuss the deceptive nature of sin and the destructive progression it leads its victims through until they are finally destroyed by its tactics. James wanted to hammer home the truth that every good gift comes from God.

We need to consider whether or not we have allowed ourselves to turn to other sources to meet our needs. Though God may use other people to help us, we must remember that ultimately He is the author of those good things. Let us determine to place our trust in Him and depend on His good gifts.

Devotional Prayer: Thank You for providing me with the best gifts of all.

Today’s Bible Reading: Ezekiel 35:1-36:38; James 1:1-18; Psalm 116:1-19; Proverbs 27:23-27
