Day 319: Character on Display

Author: Don Bailey

Today’s Scripture: Proverbs 27:18-20

Central Thought: The condition of a person’s heart is revealed in that person’s character.

Does this sound familiar? The alarm clock blares its daily alert—time to get up. The weary person shuts off the alarm, walks to the bathroom, and stares at the mirror trying to determine how much disaster recovery it will take get ready for work. Looking at the mirror reveals the truth of one’s appearance and assesses the progress in the grooming process.

Even though mirrors did not exist in their present form 3,000 years ago (when today’s passage was written), people knew how to look at their reflections in a pool of water or from a shiny surface. Yet, more important than this physical reflection, the character of a person reflects the condition of that person’s heart.

Taking a personal inventory of priorities, attitudes, and choices reveals the condition of a person’s heart. Choices that dishonor Christ display a personal character that is not under Christ’s control. Choices that honor the Lord show a lifestyle that is under His control. When we evaluate our lives, we will see areas we need to submit to Christ. This in turn will allow our lives to be a better reflection of Christ.

Devotional Prayer: Help me to let the character of Christ shine through my life more effectively.
