Day 58: Leave the Mountain?

Author: Fannie Mae Hall

Today’s Scripture: Mark 9:2-27

Central Thought: The mountain is great, but it is in the valley that we most often live and minister

Jesus took Peter, James, and John—the inner circle of his twelve disciples—and went up on a mountain. There Jesus was transfigured before them, and His clothing became white and radiant. Then Moses and Elijah appeared to them, and they all talked together. Apparently dazzled by the encounter, Peter suggested to Jesus that they make three tents: one for Jesus, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. To further intensify the situation, a voice spoke from a cloud telling the disciples, ‘This is my beloved Son; listen to him” (verse 7).

Suddenly the terrified disciples found themselves alone, just them and Jesus. But the four of them did not stay on the mountain as Peter had suggested. It was in the valley where Jesus’ ministry would continue. There they would encounter a man whose son was demon possessed. Just as Jesus had healed many others before, He also brought healing and deliverance to this tormented boy.

As believers, we sometimes have encounters with Jesus that are so special we want the moment to last forever. But we must remember it is in the ordinary, mundane times and places where Jesus, in all His radiance, can so beautifully shine through us.

Devotional Prayer: Lord, help me to remember that the mountaintop experiences are meant to prepare me for ministry in the routine of my life.
