Day 11: Justice Belongs to God

Author: Douglas W. Martin

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 10:1

Central Thought: God will ultimately judge those who commit evil in His time and in His way

The cause of one great frustration that is shared universally among mankind is injustice.

Injustice seems to scream at us from newspaper, magazine, and television media. Media delivery has gone from a television capable of receiving 4 VHF and 5 UHF local channels using an antenna to 99 cable channels available at the push of a remote button. With this increase in the availability of information, there seems to be an increase in the number of channels and formats that give voice to the subject of injustice and crime. A plea is constantly before the public to provide information that will help catch a criminal or solve a cold-case.

We can easily say along with the psalmist, ‘Why, O Lord, do you stand afar off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?” It is obvious to many that this perceived distance and disinterest on the part of God emboldens those who do wrong. Since they do not see immediate justice, they add to their evil action an attitude of pride that somehow they have escaped the judgment they justly deserve.

No justice—or slow justice—becomes the very snare into which wrongdoers fall. God is not disinterested and is not at a distance. He holds off justice at times in order to allow pride its full bloom while at the same time offering opportunity for repentance. The key is to seize the moment that is offered and choose the path of humility. It is helpful to realize that ultimately God will judge, but the timing is a matter of His choosing.

Devotional Prayer: Lord, I see all around me evidence of injustice and those who believe they are getting away with something. Lord, rather than being deceived into thinking that men are getting away with sin, I ask You to help me not to fall into the snare of pride. Instead, help me choose the path of confession and humility. Help me to trust that You will ultimately judge justly.
