Day 156: Together We Can Make It

Author: Scott Hassett

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 122:8, 9

Central Thought: We are meant to serve each other.

I remember hearing a description of Hell. A long banqueting table covered with food and surrounded by people. Each person there has a large spoon tied to their arm, but all are starving because the spoons are so long that no one can get any food into their own mouth. The picture of Heaven is similar. The table, the people, and the spoons are all the same. But in Heaven everyone is happy and well fed because each person feeds another.

I don’t think this is a realistic picture of eternity. It is, however, an amazingly accurate picture of what the difference ought to be between the world and the Church.

All around us is a sin-sick world full of people struggling in futile effort to get for themselves the things they desire: acceptance, love, purpose. Unfortunately, the people in the Christian community sometimes behave in a similar manner and fail to recognize the needs of others.

God’s intention for His family is that each person tends to the needs of their brother and sister. The developing church is a wonderful example of this principle in action as new converts gladly sold possessions and land to ensure that the needs of all the body of believers were met.

When a body of believers operates in this manner, every member of the group expresses the song of David: ‘I was glad when they said unto me, ‘Let us go into the house of the Lord!’”

Devotional Prayer: Lord, show me the needs of those around me and how I can use my abilities and means to meet those needs.
