Day 155: Flying-Friendly Skies

Today’s Scripture: Acts 1:6-8

Central Thought: Times and seasons are God’s concern; our responsibility is obedience.

I live very near DFW Airport, the main airport for the Dallas/Fort Worth area and the third busiest airport in the country. It has three Federal Aviation Administration towers and handles more than 50,000 flights per month. Our sky is always full of planes.

What if the impatient pilot of one of those flights called his control tower and complained, ‘Why do I have to wait up here while that other jet is allowed to land? It’s not fair. And that runway you assigned me to! I hate landing on that runway! Why can’t I land on the runway closest to my terminal? I’m not sure you guys know what you’re doing! I’ll just do what I think is best.”

What if all of the pilots did the same? Can you imagine the chaos and disaster that would result?

This does not happen, of course, because a pilot knows that his plane is only one piece of a massive system. He knows that the people in the tower make decisions regarding who lands because they have access to all the information. The pilot subjects his own desires to the greater wellbeing of the system. By doing so, his own goals are reached in as efficient a manner as possible.

In Acts, Jesus tells His disciples that time and seasons are not their concern. Their responsibility is to receive power from on high and go into all the world. That instruction is still valid today.

Devotional Prayer: Father, we submit the seasons of our lives to You and ask You to empower us to walk in simple and complete obedience to Your Word.
