Day 173: Opposition to God’s Word

Author: Don Bailey

Today’s Scripture: Acts 13:46-52

Central Thought: We must be prepared to deal with opposition to our testimony of Christ.

Why would anyone not want good news? When we consider all of the bad news in the world today, it would seem that everyone should welcome the most important news of all—salvation through Christ. Yet, many people chose death over life and oppose those who bring the good news.

Paul and Barnabas saw great success in proclaiming the Gospel to the Gentiles. Many of these people turned to Christ as a result of their ministry. However, some of the Jews incited opposition among community leaders and forced Paul and Barnabas to leave the city. Though they shook the dust of their feet in protest to these actions, Paul and Barnabas were also filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit’s presence.

We, too, can be filled with joy and the Holy Spirit’s presence when we face opposition for the Gospel. The same power that helped the Apostles is available for us today. We can also have the same confidence Paul and Barnabas had as they trusted God for help. Opposition does not have to stop us; rather, it can serve to strengthen us to serve the Lord.

Devotional Prayer: Grant me the courage to stand strong in the face of opposition.
