Day 172: Faithful Friends

Author: Scott Hassett

Today’s Scripture: Proverbs 17:17-18

Central Thought: Christians should be the most faithful friends.

Jerron enjoyed his weekly visits with Brother Matthews at the nursing home. Brother Matthews had been a missionary for 40 years; and now in his late 80s with declining health, he could only reminisce about those dedicated years of service. One day at the end of their chat, Brother Matthew’s eyes misted up and he told Jerron that these weekly visits meant more to him than anyone could imagine. Those visits kept him encouraged that he could share God’s blessings with someone who could keep the legacy alive.

It is difficult to assess the true value of a good friend. Today’s reading says, ‘A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity” (Proverbs 17:17). Good friends can be trusted to be there in difficult times. They will not leave their friends to suffer alone.

We should strive to be that type of friend to those around us. The body of Christ grows stronger when believers stand by one another and support one another through both good and bad times. We should consider ways we can become a better friend to our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Devotional Prayer: Show me ways that I can be a better friend to others.
