Day 171: Never Forget

Today’s Scripture: Psalm 137:1-9

Central Thought: We should always remember what God has done for us.

Torture, anguish, pain, and despair! As prisoners in Babylon, the captive Israelites experienced all of these and more at the hands of their captors. They were confined in another country a long way from home. Some gave in to despair and never made it back home. Others used their memories of home to keep them going. They determined to survive and return home.

Jerusalem was no ordinary city to the tribe of Judah. In addition to being their capital, it was also the city where God’s presence could be found. A forced deportation to Babylon left many despairing to ever make it back to the city of God. Yet, to persevere, they made vows so that they would never forget their city. Seventy years after the captivity began, God restored the people to their land.

We, as Christians, should be even more determined to never forget the things God has done. God’s mighty acts serve as reminders to us so that we can always keep our trust in Him. We should frequently think back to the answered prayers and the miracles God has done in our lives. They will help us to never forget His mercies.

Devotional Prayer: Lord, I commit myself to always remember Your goodness.
