Day 169: Answer to Our Fears

Author: Scott Hassett

Today’s Scripture: 1 Kings 18:7-15

Central Thought: We can trust God to help us overcome our fears.

‘Daddy, can you hold me? I’m scared!” Many children have found comfort in their dad’s firm, but gentle hug. Fear just had to go when daddy was there.

Obadiah’s fears, however, were far from childlike in nature. He knew Elijah served the living God—as he also did. Obadiah also knew that God could transport Elijah from one location to another in a moment’s time. Ahab would have Obadiah executed if he went to meet Elijah and did not find him. This knowledge led to Obadiah’s fear to tell Ahab that Elijah was there. Elijah assured Obadiah that he would still be there when Ahab came. Obadiah’s faithfulness in protecting 150 of God’s prophets was not forgotten, nor were his fears ignored.

Even if our earthly fathers can no longer give us a reassuring hug—or maybe we never had a father that could give us that hug—all of us can take our fears to our Heavenly Father. He understands those fears better than anyone else can and cares for us like no one else. On Father’s Day, let us remember the Father who will always be there when we are afraid.

Devotional Prayer: Help me to always trust You with my fears.
