Day 184: Tower of Refuge

Author: Don Bailey

Today’s Scripture: Proverbs 18:10

Central Thought: God is the refuge for those who are righteous.

Forts have always been an important source of security. People fleeing from an enemy would often try to reach the closest fort with the hopes they would be safe. In the Middle Ages, castles were built with a tower that was the most fortified place in the structure. Residents of the castle went there during times of attack trusting in the security they would find.

Today’s reading reminds us that God is a tower of refuge for the righteous (that is those who know Christ as Lord and Savior). When believers face the onslaught of the enemy, they know they can depend on the Lord’s help to overcome their enemy. Unlike human fortresses that are sometimes overcome by an enemy, the Lord’s tower of refuge can never be defeated by any foe.

This assurance of God’s protection should help us face whatever challenges may come our way in life. God’s promises to us are just as sure as they were to the original readers of Proverbs. Knowing God is our refuge helps us to confidently fulfill the plans He has for our lives. God will always be with us as we are serving Him.

Devotional Prayer: Thank You for being my refuge.
