Day 52: Jesus Can Help Hopeless Cases

Author: Nancy A. Stevens

Today’s Scripture: Mark 5:21-43

Central Thought: When you feel you have nowhere to turn, cry out to Jesus. He’s always listening

Wherever Jesus went, desperate people sought Him. In today’s Scripture passage we read about two of those desperate people. Jairus, a synagogue ruler, asked Jesus to heal his daughter who was dying. How did Jesus respond? He immediately accompanied the desperate man.

En route, however, another desperate person mustered all her strength to reach out and touch Jesus’ cloak. She had been to countless doctors and had spent everything she had. The medical profession viewed her as a hopeless case. Although she had never met Jesus, she had heard about Him. And she decided that if she just touched His clothing, that would be enough—she would be healed. And that is exactly what happened.

When Jesus asked who had touched Him, He gave the woman the opportunity to come forward and receive His blessing and His recognition of her faith.

By this time, however, Jairus’ daughter had died. When Jesus reached the man’s home and told the weeping crowd that the child was not dead, the crowd laughed at Him because they knew the daughter’s situation was beyond help. But Jesus intervened and raised the girl from the dead!

Jesus did not show favoritism to Jairus because of his position or financial standing. He responded compassionately to both Jairus and the woman. Everyone is important to Him.

Devotional Prayer: Father, when we face a seemingly impossible situation, help us to remember that You stand ready to help hopeless cases.
