Day 36: God’s Law

Author: Robert Hayes

Today’s Scripture: Exodus 21:22-23:13

Central Thought: God provides laws to preserve society

On August 1, 2001, Chief Justice Roy Moore of the Alabama Supreme Court fulfilled a campaign promise to make the Ten Commandments more prominent. He did so by placing a 5,280 pound Ten Commandments memorial in the State Judicial Building in Montgomery, Alabama.

Moore’s actions caused a firestorm. Joel Sogol of the ACLU argued, ‘Our courts should enforce secular law, and not God’s law.” Only someone who ignored the Old Testament Scriptures could honestly make a statement like this.

God was concerned about the survival of the new community that had just left Egypt. He knew that there would be conflicts, and He wanted to make sure that His people knew how to deal with them.

More than likely, you have had conflicts with others from time-to-time. This is a normal part of life, but these conflicts should not destroy our relationships. God has given us principles to follow that teach us to respect one another. When we have conflict, we must deal with the conflict, make any amends, and then be restored into fellowship. That is God’s Law!

Devotional Prayer: Lord, help us to use Your principles to resolve our differences.
