Day 27: God is Bigger

Author: Nancy A. Stevens

Today’s Scripture: Exodus 4:1-5:21

Central Thought: God is bigger than our inabilities; all He expects from us is our obedience

‘Lord, I can’t possibly do that! Can’t you find someone else to do it?”

God had appeared to Moses in the burning bush, turned his staff into a snake, afflicted his hand with leprosy and then healed it, promised to do more miraculous signs, and reassured Moses that He would go with him. In spite of all this, Moses asked God to send someone else.

Why? Moses was focused on his inadequate speaking ability. Somehow, in Moses’ mind, all God’s miracle-working power was not enough to overcome Moses’ weakness. God reminded Moses that He had created him and had given him the ability to speak, and He would help Moses speak and would teach him what to say. Even after God’s assurance, Moses repeated, ”O Lord, please send someone else’” (Exodus 4:13, NIV)!

How did God respond? His anger burned against Moses, and He told him that his brother Aaron could accompany him and speak on Moses’ behalf. Then He reassured Moses, ”I will help both of you speak and will teach you what to do’” (4:14-15).

When we insist that we cannot do what God calls us to do, aren’t we really saying to God that He isn’t as big as our weakness or problem? Are we saying further that we know that He has helped us in the past, but this time our inability is too much for Him to overcome?

If we step back and look at the past victories that God has worked in our lives and compare His power and promises to our inadequacies, we will conclude that our God is all-powerful and there is no weakness or inability that He cannot overcome.

Devotional Prayer: Father, when You call us to do something, help us to commit our inabilities, weaknesses, and fears to You and simply obey, knowing that You will help us.
