Day 43: Finding Forgiveness

Author: Richard L. Schoonover

Today’s Scripture: Exodus 34:1-35:9

Central Thought: Even when we sin, we can still find forgiveness from God

Have you ever broken something? Perhaps it was a plate, cup, or glass that was not valuable. Maybe, though, you broke one of your mother’s expensive vases. What did you feel like? You were probably afraid to tell her because you feared the consequences.

Moses had broken something—the tablets on which God had written the Ten Commandments (Exodus 32:19). But God did not punish Moses. Instead, God instructed Moses to make two more tablets and to once again ascend Mount Sinai and ‘present yourself there to me on the top of the mountain” (Exodus 34:1,2). There God declared to Moses that He was a compassionate and gracious God who was slow to anger and abounding in love and faithfulness (verse 6). While God does judge sin (verse 7), His desire is to draw people unto himself (verses 22-24). God also allowed Moses to again experience His presence (verses 29-35).

Perhaps you have broken God’s laws. Maybe you are ashamed of what you have done. You may feel that God does not love you and you cannot come into His presence. Just like God invited Moses back into His presence, He is also inviting you to experience His presence. Ask God to forgive you, and allow His peace to overshadow your life. You, too, can experience God’s radiating presence.

Devotional Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for allowing me to bring my broken life to You. I ask You to forgive me and help me to experience the joy and peace of being in Your presence.
