Day 6: Eliminate Temptations

Author: Don Bailey

Today’s Scripture: Matthew 5:27-30

Central Thought: We need to remove the sources of temptation from our lives

Running up the stairs of a tall building can be a grueling enough exercise, but imagine running up those stairs wearing a 70-pound weight on your back. Contestants on one reality-based TV show had to do just that. Those who had lost the most weight had to wear the most weight. At the end of the competition, all of the contestants had a new appreciation for the weight they had lost.

Today’s passage uses extreme examples (removing an eye or cutting off a hand) to illustrate the important truth that we cannot afford to hang onto anything that hinders us from serving the Lord. It would be far better to go through life without that offending appendage than to go to eternity lost. Jesus knew nothing in life was more important than our relationship with Him.

We need to carefully consider our own relationship with the Lord. It is far too easy to allow things to begin to interfere with the closeness we may have once had with Him. Little by little, other things can cloud that relationship and rob us of spiritual vitality. We need to remove the extra weights from our lives.

Devotional Prayer: Lord, show me those things I need to remove from my life.
